Monarchs Play to Scoreless Draw with Seattle

Olmes Garcia Monarchs vs S2 0426

SANDY, Utah (Tuesday, April 26, 2016) ā€“ Real Monarchs SLC played to a scoreless draw against Seattle Sounders FC 2 at Rio Tinto Stadium on Tuesday, earning a point after dropping consecutive 1-0 defeats in the previous two matches.

GK Lalo Fernandez finished with two saves ā€“ both in the first half ā€“ to earn the third shutout of the season for the Monarchs (2-2-2, 8 points).

The first good opportunity of the match came in the 11th minute when Seattle forward Victor Mansaray got a clean break into the box, but he pushed his shot into the far post and the match stayed scoreless.

The two teams battled through midfield for much of the first half and Seattle got another opportunity in the 36th minute when Mansaray dropped a ball back for Myron Samuel for a shot from the edge of the 18 but Fernandez parried it away for the save and the match went into halftime tied 0-0.

In the 65th minute, the Monarchs got a scoring chance off a deep free kick on the right side.

MF Ricardo Velazco sent the ball in from the right corner and found DF Emilio Orozco coming across the six-yard box at the far side, but his header skipped outside the far post.  After having several shots blocked, it was the cleanest look the Monarchs mustered to that point in the match.

That would be the home sideā€™s best chance of the match and the final whistle blew with a scoreless draw.

The Monarchs were playing with Fernandez, DF Boyd Okwuonu, DF Phanuel Kavita, MF Danilo Acosta, FW Devon Sandoval and FW Olmes Garcia on loan from Real Salt Lake.

Real Monarchs will play its next 11 matches away from Rio Tinto Stadium as the field undergoes resurfacing.  Two of those matches are home matches for the Monarchs but will be played at Ute Soccer Field at the University of Utah on May 21 and at Aces Ballpark in Reno, Nevada, on June 11.  The first match in that 11-game stretch is Saturday against the Colorado Springs Switchbacks SC in Colorado.
