USL Team of the Week: Fernandez Stands Out for Monarchs

Lalo Fernandez vs Tulsa 0409

Lalo Fernandez earned the second shutout of the season in three game for Real Monarchs SLC and his three saves him landed him on the USL Team of the Week for Week 3.

Fernandez made some key stops against the Tulsa Roughnecks on Saturday and also came off his line to snare and punch clear some crosses as well as the Monarchs improved to 2-0-1 with the 1-0 road win.

“Lalo was huge.  It’s what you ask from a goalkeeper.  You know going into the game that your team will give up an opportunity and you need your goalie to keep you in the game,” Monarchs Head Coach Freddy Juarez said.  “He was confident.  He was relaxed.  He managed the game very well and he dealt with aerial play.  He was massive.”

Fernandez joins defenders Taylor Mueller (Charleston Battery), Braeden Troyer (Richmond Kickers), Tommy Meyer (Swope Park Rangers) and Sem de Wit (Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2); midfielders Derrick Etienne Jr. (New York Red Bulls II), Niall McCabe (Louisville City FC) and Vince Cicciarelli (St. Louis FC); and forwards Sean Okoli (FC Cincinatti), Raheem Edwards (Toronto FC II) and Mike Seth (Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC) on the list.

“If they didn’t pick him, that other goalkeeper must have had a heck of a game,” smiled Juarez.
