On Friday, Juan Martinez arrived at SLC International Airport and was greeted by a group of fans. Here is a look at the welcoming committee in action.
Martinez is 29 years old. Born in Argentina, he has played his whole career in South America, except for a brief stop in Saudi Arabia.
Martinez will wear No. 22 on his jersey, and will feature "Martinez" on his name plate and not his nickname "Burrito."
Martinez is the second player to come directly from Boca Juniors to MLS. The first was 2008 MLS MVP Guillermo Barros Schelotto.
Martinez is eligible to play immediately for Real Salt Lake.
He is the ninth player from Argentina signed by the Claret-and-Cobalt.
He started his professional career at 17 years old with Velez Sarsfield in Buenos Aires in 2003.
In 2010, Martinez shared Argentine Footballer of the Year honors with Lionel Messi.
In 2012, he won the FIFA Club World Cup with Corinthians from Brazil, beating Chelsea in the tournament final.
Martinez is the sixth Designated Player in Real Salt Lake's history, joining current DPs Joao Plata and Sebastian Jaime, along with former DPs Kyle Beckerman and Javier Morales, who both remain with the club but not with the DP tag, and Alvaro Saborio.
Martinez has four caps for Argentina, scoring one goal in those four appearances.
Martinez got his nickname "El Burrito" becuase of his resemblance to Ariel Ortega, who bore the same nickname.
