Save of the Week: Attinella seeks second straight honor

One week after taking home his second MLS Save of the Week honor of the 2015 season, Real Salt lake goalkeeper Jeff Attinella is up for the honor again.

Attinella made six saves in RSL’s 6-4 defeat to D.C. United on Saturday, giving him 33 in seven starts this season.  While D.C.’s six-goal flood will ultimately be what the match is remembered for, Attinella was at times masterful in front of the net, including on the stop that earned the Save of the Week nomination.

“I thought he had a very good game, to be honest with you,” RSL Head Coach Jeff Cassar said after the match.  “He deserved better than six goals.”

In the 39th minute, former RSL forwards Fabian Espindola and Alvaro Saborio connected on a scoring chance that was thwarted by Attinella.  Espindola swung the ball in from the right side and found the head of Saborio – making his second start for his new club.  Attinella rose up for the save though and parried the point-blank header clear for a corner kick.

It was such an incredible save that it even drew acknowledgement from Saborio after the ball was cleared, as the forward reached out and slapped five to Attinella.
