Saborio up for MLS Goal of the Week

Goal of the Week - Week 8

SANDY, Utah – Real Salt Lake forward Alvaro Saborio has been nominated for MLS Goal of the Week!

Saborio’s wonderful ninth minute strike in Saturday’s 2-2 draw against Vancouver Whitecaps FC is up for the honor. The buildup to the strike was fantastic, with Javier Morales starting the move with a delicate chipped pass to Luke Mulholland on the right wing. Mulholland neatly flicked a header down the line to Tony Beltran, who quickly hit a low cross to the top of the area. Ned Grabavoy collected the pass, slithering by several Whitecaps FC defenders before playing a pass through the legs of a Vancouver player to Saborio in the left side of the area. The Costa Rican international hit the ball with his first touch, deliciously curling his 12-yard left-footer into the top corner at the far post.

Saborio is up against New York’s Bradley Wright-Phillips, Seattle’s Obafemi Martins, Dallas’ Mauro Diaz and Vancouver’s Sebastian Fernandez for Goal of the Week. This is Saborio’s third nomination this year for MLS Goal of the Week; he has been nominated for the award every game that he’s scored in. RSL has won Goal of the Week once this year, with Captain Kyle Beckerman picking up the honor for his 11th minute strike in RSL’s 3-3 draw at San Jose on March 15.

Voting for MLS Goal of the Week runs until 12:59 a.m. MT on Friday morning. Click here to vote for Sabo!
