Quote Sheet: RSL 2-0 San Jose

Beckerman v. San Jose - 03.03.13

Real Salt Lake Head Coach Jason Kreis
General impressions:

"I am really, really proud of my guys’ effort. My main focus was really if we could out compete a team that is known to be one of the best competitors in the league. I thought our guys found ways to weather some storms because San Jose is very dangerous for 10-15 minute periods and will always be dangerous with players like [Chris] Wondolowski."

Real Salt Lake FW Alvaro Saborio
Thoughts on San Jose:

"They are a very good team. They have the Supporters’ Shield, so we have to come here and make our opportunities happen."

On team speed:

"My team likes to play football so they have to make runs for us to work as a unit. So we have to find a way to mix my speed into the style of play we have as a team."

Real Salt Lake MF Kyle Beckerman
On the result:

"Overall we needed to work on our field positions. San Jose comes out with a lot of energy and we knew it was going to be a hard game. Sometimes teams close off the angles and we as a team have to adjust."

On younger center back pairing:

"They have been doing really well. We worked all preseason together and we know that we have to keep on working harder and harder with how teams will come at us. Overall they did fine and did everything they were asked to do like keep [Chris] Wondolowski from scoring goals."

San Jose Head Coach Frank Yallop
On the game:

"If you look at general play, I thought we played pretty well. We had enough chances in the first half to be up a couple of goals. That’s the sport though. You have to punish the other team when you get chances and we didn’t do that.”

On the team’s attack:

“I wasn’t sure how we would play with the guys we had out, but overall, I thought we did enough to get something out of the game. We created a number of good chances and we moved the ball, especially in the first 60 minutes. It was a frustrating night, but there were some positives we can take out of it moving ahead to next week.”

San Jose DF Justin Morrow
On the loss:

“It’s a difficult way to start the new season at home. The beauty of soccer is you don’t have too much time to think about the negatives because we have to apply the positives of the match towards New York [Red Bulls] next week. I felt we had a strong first half. We defended well, we created many chances, just couldn’t finish tonight.”

On missing injured players:

“We missed the guys up top in [Steven] Lenhart and Alan [Gordon]. We also missed Steven Beitashour in the back. No question we are a better team with them, but we were able create chances in their place. Players are going to miss time due to injury throughout the season. If we can step up to fill their voids like we did tonight we are going to be fine.”

San Jose FW Chris Wondolowski
On scoring chances:

“Honestly, I felt we had a chance to put this game away in the first half. We didn’t capitalize on our chances, and I had trouble putting the ball on frame. I take fault for that as I had at least four chances. [Alvaro] Saborio had two great finishes for them, but this game could have swung our way in the first half.”

On playing with Mike Fucito:

“Anybody watching the match could tell that we were a dangerous pair up top. We created a lot of opportunities when we worked together. The two of us had chances that we wish we had back, but the technique wasn’t there tonight. Overall, I felt we didn’t miss a beat with Mike up top and I’m excited to see how scary our attack will be once we are at full strength.”
