Real Salt Lake MF Luis Gil called up to U.S. U-20's

SANDY, Utah – Real Salt Lake MF Luis Gil has been called up to the U.S. U-20 National Team for a training camp in Sunrise, Fla. from Dec. 15-22.

This is the second-consecutive U-20 camp that Gil has been called to. The 19-year-old Gil was a part of the team that competed at the Marbella Cup tournament in Spain in mid-October.

This will be the first camp for the U-20’s since the team learned its 2013 CONCACAF U-20 Championship opponents as the team begins preparations in earnest for the tournament. The CONCACAF U-20 Championship, which takes place Feb. 18-March 3 in Puebla, Mexico, serves as the regional qualifying tournament for the 2013 FIFA U-20 World Cup.

Gil played a major role for Real Salt Lake in 2012, appearing in 29 games, starting 19 times, scoring one goal and adding three assists in league play for the Claret-and-Cobalt. The Garden Grove, Calif. native figures to be even more involved in 2013, when he’ll likely start full-time on the outside of RSL’s midfield diamond.

Gil, Jack McBean (L.A. Galaxy), Jose Villarreal (L.A. Galaxy), Oscar Sorto (L.A. Galaxy) and Shane O’Neill (Colorado Rapids) are the five MLS players who will participate in the camp. The rest of U-20 Head Coach Tab Ramos’ 24-man roster currently plays in college, Europe or Mexico.
