Preview: RSL-C.S. Herediano

Herediano preview

SANDY, Utah – Real Salt Lake (2-1-0, 6 points, Group 2 #2) will play its most important match to date this year on Tuesday, Oct. 23, when it will host Costa Rican champions C.S. Herediano (3-0-0, 9 points, Group 2 #1) in a must-win CONCACAF Champions League Group Stage match at Rio Tinto Stadium.

Currently trailing first-place Herediano by three points in CCL Group 2, second-place RSL must beat the Costa Rican champs either 1-0 or by at least two goals in Tuesday’s Group 2 finale to win the group and advance to the tournament’s Quarterfinals.

Unfortunately for the Claret-and-Cobalt, leading-scorer Alvaro Saborio is suspended for Tuesday’s match due to yellow card accumulation. RSL could also be without regular forward Fabian Espindola and starting center back Jamison Olave on Tuesday, as both players picked up slight injuries in last week’s 0-0 draw at Seattle and are questionable for the Herediano match.

Real Salt Lake played Herediano in its first CCL Group Stage match, losing to the club 1-0 in San Jose, Costa Rica on July 31. RSL got off to a slow start in that match, looking a bit sluggish in the opening minutes and giving up an early goal. The Claret-and-Cobalt responded well to falling behind though, looking likely to equalize before defender Nat Borchers was shown a controversial straight red card in the 58th minute.

RSL will have a relatively quick turnaround after Tuesday’s match, playing again on Saturday, Oct. 27, when the club will host Vancouver Whitecaps FC at Rio Tinto Stadium in its regular season finale. Real Salt Lake will open up its Western Conference Semifinal series against Seattle Sounders FC on Nov. 3. Game times and broadcast information for the home-and-home series against Seattle has yet to be determined.

Tickets to the Herediano match, the Oct. 27 season finale against Vancouver and to the MLS Cup Playoffs are on sale and can be purchased online at www.RealSaltLake.com, at the Rio Tinto Stadium box office or by calling (801) 727-2700.
