RSL “Game Note” of the Match: Kreis Does Lineup Shuffle … Again

Real Salt Lake Head Coach Jason Kreis heads into Saturday’s tilt with Toronto – the team’s 30th game in all competitions this season – yet to fill out the same 11 names in the starting lineup in consecutive games … Injuries, cards, suspensions, national team duty and fixture congestion have all conspired to prevent a duplicate lineup in back-to-back matches, something that hasn’t happened since July 31/Aug. 7, 2010 – a span of 48 MLS, CCL and Open Cup games – and counting.

RSL History v. Toronto

Real Salt Lake’s 3-1 win over Toronto FC back on June 25 at Rio Tinto Stadium broke a stalemate in their regular season series, which RSL now leads by a 4-3-2 margin, and increased its record in all competitions against the Reds to 5-3-3 when including last season’s CONCACAF Champions League group stage results. The Claret-and-Cobalt could be held at bay for only so long during the late-June contest, the attack managing to open up a three-goal cushion by the hour mark. DF Nat Borchers opened the RSL account in the 39th minute, three minutes before FW Álvaro Saborío notched his first goal in MLS play in 2011, a tally the Costa Rican international doubled with another strike in the 60th minute. Former Toronto FC striker Maicon Santos brought one back for the visitors in the 66th minute, but that would prove to be TFC’s lone shot on frame on the evening, allowing the Utah side to play out the victory in comfortable fashion.

Despite that favorable result, RSL might as well prepare from scratch for Saturday’s contest, as Aron Winter’s TFC side has made 10 new additions to its roster in the month-and-a-half since the loss in Sandy. The Utah side is still in search of its first-ever victory in Ontario, as RSL has collected a 0-2-2 mark in MLS action in Toronto to go along with a 1-1 draw in their CCL meeting last Sept. 28, a result that secured RSL’s passage to the tournament’s knockout phase. Those two goals account for half of the combined scoring total from all five matches between RSL and TFC at BMO Field, with last year’s scoreless draw in league play on Aug. 28 doing nothing to add to the meager scoring ledger between the two sides north of the border.
