The Real Salt Lake duo of midfielder Luis Gil and forward Donny Toia both saw the field for the United States Under-20 Men's National Team on Tuesday in the USA's 3-3 draw against their French counterparts in a friendly contested in Vichy, France.
The 17-year-old Gil opened his scoring account at the U-20 level with the Americans' third goal in the 54th mnute. Gil was in the right place at the right time, as he pounced on Anthony Brooks' deflected shot off a corner kick to put the USA up 3-1 at the time. Gil would end up playing the full 90 minutes on the day.
Also seeing time against France was the 19-year-old Toia, who entered for coach Tab Ramos' side in the 78th minute in place of Terrance Boyd. The trip to France with the U-20s marks Toia's first appearance with a U.S. Youth National Team side since he participated in a camp with the U-18 team back in 2008.
After a training day on Wednesday, the U.S. U-20s will continue their Vichy-based camp on Thursday with a rematch against the French U-20s. When the six-day U-20 camp ends on Friday, Toia will return stateside and join his Real Salt Lake teammates in Dallas while Gil will stay in Europe, hopping down to Portugal to join the U.S. Under-18 MNT for the Lisbon International Tournament.
