RSL Weekly Update: April 6

Real Salt Lake Sends DF David Horst on Loan to USSF Second Division’s Puerto Rico Islanders
Real Salt Lake today announced that third-year defender David Horst has been sent on loan to the Puerto Rico Islanders for the club’s 2010 USSF Second Division schedule, effectively immediately. The 24-year-old Horst – who can be recalled by Real Salt Lake at any point during the tenure of the loan – joined the 2009/10 CONCACAF Champions League participants over the weekend and will be ready to suit up for the Islanders when they open their USSF II schedule on April 21 at Estadio Juan Ramón Loubriel in San Juan against NSC Minnesota. The Old Dominion University product and 2007 USL Premier Development League Defender of the Year recipient while a member of the Hampton Roads Piranhas has suited up three times in League play for Real Salt Lake, earning one starting nod during his rookie campaign in 2008 and starting one of his two appearances during RSL’s run to the MLS Cup title in 2009.

Real Salt Lake Opens 2010 Rio Tinto Stadium Slate Saturday v. Sounders FC
After opening its MLS Cup title defense with a pair of games on the road, Real Salt Lake (1-1-0, 3 pts.) will finally get the chance to play in front of the Rio Tinto Stadium faithful this Saturday, April 10, when the Claret-and-Cobalt will welcome fellow Western Conference foe Seattle Sounders FC (1-1-0, 3 pts.) to Sandy. The 7:00 p.m. MT kick will be preceded by a special pre-game ceremony beginning at approximately6:30 p.m. that will include the unveiling of the first Championship banner at Rio Tinto Stadium and the issuance of the MLS Cup 2009 Championship rings to the team’s players, coaches and ownership.

RSL v. Sounders FC Series History
Real Salt Lake and Sounders FC split their two meetings in Seattle’s expansion campaign last year, beginning with SSFC’s 2-0 win at Qwest Field in RSL’s 2009 league opener on March 28. Real Salt Lake would even the series at Rio Tinto Stadium on August 8, when a Robbie Findley goal was good enough to capture a 1-0 victory. The two sides also met in Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup qualifying play a month after their first meeting on April 28, when the Sounders used a two-goal, two-assist effort from Sebastien Le Toux to advance via a 4-1 win at the Starfire Sports Complex in suburban Tukwila, Wash. Real Salt Lake and Seattle will close out their 2010 series on Sept. 9, when the Utah side will make its first visit to the Pacific Northwest venue since its MLS Cup 2009 triumph last November.

RSL Rewind: “Penalty Phase” Downs RSL at Dynamo
Real Salt Lake would get its second fast start in as many road contests last Thursday in Houston, but this time the lead wouldn’t last as the defending champions were downed by the Dynamo 2-1 in front of 18,197 fans at Robertson Stadium. The Utahns hopped in front just 17 minutes in, when a quick build-up through FW Álvaro Saborío – making his first start in an RSL uniform – and captain Kyle Beckerman ended at the feet of MF Javier Morales, who continued his blistering start to 2010 with a slotted shot inside the right post that would put the visitors up for the remainder of the first half. But the second 45 minutes started roughly for RSL, a pair of challenges from DF Jamison Olave just three minutes apart leading to penalty kick opportunities that were converted by Dynamo MF Brad Davis in the 53rd and 56th minutes, giving Houston a lead it would manage to hold onto for the rest of the contest.

Real Salt Lake Schedule: April 7-11, 2010 (all times MT unless noted)

Fans will be able to get sized for their “bling” from April 10-30 (order must be paid in full at time of sizing), with the jewelry expected to arrive in mid-May.
