Earthquakes sign Brazilian forward Eduardo

The San Jose Earthquakes announced today that they have signed Brazilian forward Eduardo. Per league and team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed. Eduardo will be placed on the Quakes roster pending the receipt of his ITC.

"Eduardo will bring a lot to our club," said General Manager John Doyle. "He is a physical presence up top with the ability to hold the ball, and he also has great feet. He has proven that he can score goals in quality leagues around the world and we think that he will have success in MLS also."

Eduardo most recently played for FC Basel in the Swiss Super League. He registered 17 goals in his 96 appearances for Basel since joining the team on loan in 2005. He helped lead Basel to two Swiss League titles (in 2005 and 2008) and a pair of Swiss Cup championships (in 2007 and 2008).

The 29-year-old forward has played for successful clubs around the world such as FC Toulouse (French Ligue 1), R. Charleroi S.C. (Belgian Jupiler) and with his hometown club, Vasco de Gama in Brazil.

He burst onto the scene with Charleroi in the Belgian league and scored 24 goals in 84 appearances, which helped earn a big contract with French club Toulousse. While there, Eduardo helped the team win the French Ligue 2 and earn promotion to the top flight. He scored eight times in 57 appearances with the club, where he played primarily as a left winger. The Rio de Janeiro native was part of the Vasco de Gama side that won the Taca Rio, an annual tournament in the nation's capital in 1999, the Torneio Rio-Sao Paulo in 1999, the Taca Guanabara and Copa Mercosur in 2000 and the Campeonato Brasileiro Seria A title in the same year.
