Real Monarchs Look to End Losing Streak Against Earthquakes II

HERRIMAN, Utah (Monday, August 7, 2023) – Real Monarchs (6-12-2, 21 points, 12th in West) host Northern California foe, San Jose Earthquakes II (8-7-5, 33 points, 5th in West) at Zions Bank Stadium on Wednesday, August 9th with kickoff set for 8:00 p.m. MT. In their last three matches Real Monarchs have been unable to claim a win and will look to end their losing streak against Earthquakes II. Wednesday’s matchup marks the second meeting between these two teams this season having met earlier this year in April where the Monarchs were victorious 1-0.

In their previous match Real Monarchs suffered a lopsided 4-0 defeat at the hands of St. Louis CITY2 despite an impressive effort from goalkeeper Derrek Chan, who set the record for most saves in a Real Monarchs competition. The Monarchs were caught on the back heel early by St. Louis’s intense and high press which led to multiple defensive errors throughout the match. The floodgates would open for CITY2 in the 38th minute after the Monarchs backline failed to mark open targets inside the box. Nearly ten minutes later a defensive lapse on a corner by the Monarchs would allow St. Louis to score another goal right before halftime in the 44th minute, going down 2-0. In hunt for a goal the Monarchs attempted to mount a comeback as forwards Zavier Gozo and Ilijah Paul created multiple chances in dangerous areas but Real Monarchs were unable to capitalize in the second half. St. Louis would resume the slaughter as they notched another goal off of a corner in the 63rd minute and in the 89th minute took advantage of a counter attacking opportunity. As full-time expired the Real Monarchs would only create one on target scoring attempt opposed to CITY2’s 12 shots on goal, falling 4-0.

Real Monarchs vs San Jose Earthquakes II Preview

Having defeated Earthquakes II 1-0 earlier this year on Sunday, April 9 2023, Jamison Olave’s side will look to go undefeated for just the second time this season against a single opponent. In MLS NEXT Pro competition the Monarchs have only gone undefeated against an opposing team during the regular season once having claimed wins over Portland Timbers 2 in both their matchups this season. San Jose has a controlling record against the Monarchs having only lost once in MLS NEXT Pro winning twice and drawing once in four all time meetings.

The last time these two sides met at Zions Bank Stadium was during the 2022 campaign where San Jose was victorious 1-0. This matchup at home may cause trouble for Real Monarchs as they have acquired one of the worst home records in the league this season posting an abysmal 1W-2D-7L and have been outscored by 13 goals, a severe contrast to last season when the Monarchs went undefeated in their last eight games at home. Real Monarchs have gone seven matches without a win at Zions Bank Stadium this season, the longest streak of its kind in team history. As the end of the season draws near the Monarchs will look to improve at home and claim wins in their next four matches at Zions Bank Stadium starting against San Jose.

Up Next: After the game against San Jose Earthquakes II, Real Monarchs will remain at Zions Bank Stadium to face North Texas SC on Saturday, August 12 with kickoff set for 8:00 p.m. MT.
