Heroes Among Us - March 2013

Real Salt Lake and American Express are proud to recognize 15 year old Madison Proffit, Madee, as the recipient of the "Hero Among Us" honor on March 16th 2013. Madee is a young girl who has been helping others for most of her life. The first time Madee can remember doing service was when she was 7 years old and selflessly chose to donate her scooter to a family who had no Christmas gifts for their children. She loved the feeling of helping others and knew she wanted to do more. When she was 13 years old she organized a fundraiser and 5k the "Run for Jessie" for a young girl in her community suffering from Leukemia. The following year when she learned of another child in her community in need of help, a boy with Cerebral Palsy, she once again leapt into action, organizing “Goodies for Gabe” to help his family raise funds for the intensive therapy program he needed.

Last December the United Angels Foundation, a support organization for parents of children with disabilities, honored Madee as their Volunteer of the year. Today Madee is busy organizing another fundraiser “The Purple War” to raise donations for a women battling Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma. Madee’s favorite quote is "Be the change you want to see in the world" and she is the type of change we can all hope to see.

RSL and American Express are pleased to honor Madee Proffit as the first "Hero Among Us”" for the 2013 season.

Real Salt Lake and American Express are proud to recognize Mike Williams as the recipient of the “Hero Among Us” honor on March 30th 2013. Mike is a Utah State University Athletic (USU) trainer whose quick thinking and heroic actions are the reason that a young athlete is alive and well today. December 4th 2012’s USU basketball practice started out like any other but took a dramatic turn when 22 year old Danny Berger collapsed on the court. Mike immediately started CPR and sent for an automated external defibrillator (AED). He then determined that the young athlete was in cardiac arrest and used the AED to shock his heart back into action. Danny was then rushed to the local hospital and today he is on the road to recovery both on and off the court. On February 25th Mike was presented on the floor of the Utah State Legislature and awarded with the Heart Saver Hero award by the American Heart Association. On March 30th2013 we honor him as our Real Salt Lake and American express hero among us.
