RSL Academy Sees Losses and Draws in DA Cup Winter Showcase

The RSL Academy U-19s wrapped up its time at the Allstate DA Cup Winter Showcase with a 4-0 loss to Atlanta United FC and a 5-0 loss to Players Development Academy on Thursday and Saturday. Meanwhile, the U-17 side continued its quest for a final spot in the DA Spring Cup, splitting points with Weston U-17 and Sporting Kansas City.

The U-19s kicked off Thursday’s contests with a 4-0 loss to Atlanta United FC U-19s after Atlanta netted three first-half goals before finding the fourth to cement the win in the 83rd minute. While RSL fought to find a goal to pull back the scoreline, it wasn’t able to find a way past the stout Atlanta defense.

The Academy U-19 side capped its time at the Winter Showcase dropping a 5-0 result Saturday morning after the Players Development Academy found a goal in the 5th minute to swing momentum into its favor early.

On Thursday, The U-17s made a second-half comeback to end level 3-3 with Weston after going down two goals in the first half. Christian Nydegger found the first goal in the 56th minute before Christopher Garcia tied the match-up in the 64th. While Weston was able to record another goal, Esequiel Coronel found the final goal in the 90th minute to earn the hard-fought point.

The U-17 side took to the pitch again against Sporting Kansas City where a 9-man RSL Academy fought to hold firm and earn the point in a scoreless draw. In the 78th minute, goalkeeper Jeffrey Dewsnup saw a red card prompting Nydegger to go between the pipes to help earn the shutout. In second-half stoppage time, Daniel Rojas also saw red, but the RSL side stood tall to secure another point at the Winter Showcase.

The RSL Academy U-17s will close out the Showcase on Sunday against Baltimore Armour U-17 with kickoff set for 9:15 am MT.
