Real Salt Lake and American Express are proud to have recognized Guy Bambabate as the recipient of the “Heroes Among Us” honored on September 7, 2016.
Our hero come to us from the Columbus Community Center here in Salt Lake City. The Columbus Community Center has been transforming the lives of individuals with disabilities through employment, training, day programs, and housing since 1968. They have given the support to individuals with disabilities so they can make informed decision about life and work with independence in the community. Guy suffered a brain injury early in his life that left him with cognitive disabilities that he has had to overcome most of his life. Our hero moved here from Congo five years ago with his mother and siblings, which allowed him to receive the support and education needed.
Isaac Adam and his team at Columbus have been working with Guy to provide him with on-the-job training and support that allows Guy to earn a paycheck and learn valuable work skills. There have been obstacles and challenges that our hero has had to face with his disability, but this hasn’t stopped his desire to come to work every day to learn new skills and brighten the workplace with his great, hardworking attitude. The Columbus Center has given Guy the ability to identify employment goals and provide him with the support to achieve those goals.
Real Salt Lake and American Express are proud to have recognized, Joan Lake as the recipient of the “Heroes Among Us” honored on September 17, 2016.
Our hero comes to us from the Work Activity Center here in Salt Lake City. The Work Activity Center is Utah’s older non-profit dedicated to serving adults with significant intellectual disabilities. The Work Activity Center enriches the lives of people with disabilities by actively providing opportunities for independence and individual growth.
About four years ago, the Center was fortunate to have a community volunteer capture the warmth of the individual they support. Joan Lake was so taken by the individuals at the Center, that she actively sought ways to volunteer and be a part of the program. Her dedication to the Center led her to join one of the volunteer committees, which reviews programs that the Center designs for their individuals. Joan enjoys giving back to the Center and being involved with the individuals. She has been a great advocate to sharing their stories to create more awareness. The Center and RSL wanted to thank Joan Lake for always sharing her joy and passion with the wonderful individuals who have experienced significant disabilities.
Real Salt Lake and American Express are proud to have recognized, Chance Miraftabi as the recipient of the “Heroes Among Us” honored on September 24, 2016.
Our hero comes to us from the YMCA of Northern Utah. The Y has been making a difference in Utah for over 100 years. They provide our communities with experiences that build strong kids, strong families and strong communities. One of the experiences that has given many kids the opportunity to learn and have fun are the summer camps at the Y.
Chance was selected by the YMCA for his great achievements throughout their summer camps. The Y taught him great leadership and skills that he has able to apply back at his school. The staff at the Y required Chance to learn to act as a role model and be responsible for others which then enable him to become a Junior Leader at his school. Our hero was able to develop and form lasting friendships with other campers. Thanks to the Y, they have created a safe and positive environment during their summer camps for kids from all backgrounds to come together to learn.
