Staff Sergeant Robert Kelley
Real Salt Lake and American Express are proud to recognize Staff Sergeant Robert Kelley as the recipient of the “Heroes Among Us” honor on May 1st, 2015. Robert is a staff sergeant with the Utah National Guard. He was in the right place at the right time for a family of three who had just taken off in their small plane. He was sitting at a red light on his way to work when he noticed the plane was not gaining altitude. Seconds later the plane nears stalling, deploys the landing gear and rolls to the left before crashing into a West Jordan park. Robert swerved through traffic and blasted over the curb onto the field. There was no movement from the family as the plane caught on fire and Robert knew he needed to pull them out before the plane would be engulfed in flames. With the help of a couple volunteers, the family was pulled to safety and taken to the hospital. Thanks to the quick action and bravery of Staff Sergeant Robert Kelley, the family is alive today.
Doctor James Mayfield
Real Salt Lake and American Express are proud to recognize Doctor James Mayfield as the recipient of the “Heroes Among Us” honor on May 6th, 2015. James is a retired University of Utah professor that dedicated much of his life working to end poverty. In 1982, he helped found the non-profit organization, Choice Humanitarian. With nearly forty years of experience in village development, James played a key role in defining and developing Choice’s unique approach to poverty alleviation at the village level, utilizing a self-developing village program based upon a rural district networking and empowerment strategy. Their current attention is focused on the devastating April 25th earthquake in Nepal. This act of nature reduced much of Kathmandu and surrounding villages to rubble with a death toll reaching over seven thousand. The native team in Nepal is coordinating efforts with the local government to see that the critical needs of those affected by the earthquake are met. Doctor Blake Yerman
Real Salt Lake and American Express are proud to recognize Doctor Blake Yerman as the recipient of the “Heroes Among Us” honor on May 23rd, 2015. On the night of May 2nd, eleven year old Brynnli Cherry was involved in a severe auto accident and rushed to the emergency room in Davis Hospital Weber Campus. The Roy emergency services brought her to Blake and his team. In route, EMS performed a rare emergency airway procedure, but upon arrival she rapidly deteriorated. When Blake saw the unimaginable extent of her injuries he leaned down, grabbed her hand and asked if she was with him. Brynnli responded back, squeezing his hand so hard that he knew she was strong and he would do everything in his power to save her. After forty minutes of heroic efforts, aggressive resuscitation and interventions they stabilized her for air medical transport. According to Chief Poulsen of the Roy Fire Department, the young girl would not have survived if Blake and his team were not there. The EMS crew, nurses, respiratory techs and air transport intervened in crucial ways to save her life, but Doctor Blake Yerman gives the credit to Brynnli and her strength to stay alive.
