Heroes Among Us - June 2017

Sterling Poulson

Heroes Among Us

Real Salt Lake and American Express are proud to have recognized Sterling Poulson as the recipient of the “Hero Among Us” honored on June 17, 2017. Poulson was recognized for his involvement and dedication to the Utah Guard Charitable Trust.

The Utah Guard’s Charitable Trust mission is to aid Utah soldiers and airmen so they can stay focused on their mission ahead. They do this by providing resources that are necessary to support their families.

Sterling Poulson has served with the Utah Guard Charitable Trust for 5 years and is now a member of the board of directors. Poulson provides valuable insight to the organization because of his military background and can pinpoint specific issues military families face in their day to day lives. Poulson’s ability to balance doing the weather on KU-TV and donating countless hours to the Utah Guard Charitable Trust is inspirational.

The Utah Guard Charitable Trust is honored to have Poulson as a member and would like to thank American Express for their continued support for their service members.

Charlie Nalley

Heroes Among Us

Real Salt Lake and American Express are proud to have recognized Charlie Nalley as the recipient of the “Hero Among Us” honored on June 30, 2017. Charlie was chosen by the Disability Law Center (DLC) for his ability to advocate for himself.

The DLC has served as a protection and advocacy agency for Utahans with disabilities for 39 years. Their mission is to enforce and strengthen laws that protect the opportunities, choices, and legal rights of people with disabilities in Utah. They continue to improve the lives of all Utahans with disabilities by ending abuse and neglect, increasing access to services, ending discrimination, and creating equal opportunities for employment.

Charlie Nalley came to the DLC for help in obtaining a power wheelchair. He had already gone through the appropriate steps to receive the chair, however, was denied because he could not use the chair at his home. When his claim was denied, he went to the DLC and they convinced Medicaid to provide all the tools Charlie needed to live his daily life.

The DLC would like to use Charlie as an example of what persistence can do when you need to advocate for yourself and when to ask for help.
