SANDY, Utah (Thursday, July 28, 2016) –Real Salt Lake GK Nick Rimando has been named an inactive selection to the 2016 AT&T MLS All-Star roster, joining MF Kyle Beckerman as RSL’s only players selected for the 2016 AT&T MLS All-Star Game.
“There are so many great goalkeepers in this league that are worthy of being an All-Star. It's a huge honor to represent Real Salt Lake on the list and I’m humbled to be chosen by my peers for this accolade,” Rimando said. “There's no one happier and more excited than my son Jett. There's nothing better than being his hero.”
This is Rimando’s seventh consecutive MLS All-Star selection, earning the honor every year since 2010. He is 7-3-7 this season with three shutouts and a 1.47 goals against average. In his 17-year MLS career, he has a 179-134-98 record with a league-record 126 shutouts and a 1.18 goals against average. He is currently one win behind Kevin Hartman for the all-time win record and has equaled his 411 career MLS starts.
The MLS All-Stars will take on English club Arsenal at Avaya Stadium in San Jose, Calif. Thursday at 5:30 p.m. MT, live on ESPN, UniMás, UDN, TSN, and RDS. Rimando is among four players that were named All-Stars on Thursday who will not travel to San Jose for the match – along with Vancouver Whitecaps FC GK David Ousted, Portland Timbers MF Diego Valeri and Philadelphia Union FW CJ Sapong, rounding out the 32-man roster.
“He’s the best keeper our league has ever had. He deserves every accolade that he gets,” Real Salt Lake General Manager Craig Waibel said. “We are proud of what he’s done for the team this year and throughout his career and it’s great that he continues to represent our club with such honors.”
Real Salt Lake (8-6-7, 31 points) takes on the Philadelphia Union on Sunday from Talen Energy Stadium in Chester, PA. Kickoff is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. MT.
