SANDY, Utah (Monday, July 11, 2016) – Real Salt Lake has announced that FW Emery Welshman has undergone successful surgery to remove a right hip osteochondroma. The procedure was completed on Saturday, July 9,.at Massachusetts General Hospital by Dr. Francis Hornicek, M.D.
It is the first of two surgeries Welshman will undergo, the second scheduled in approximately six weeks in Vail, Colorado to repair a small labral tear and femoral acetabular impingement.
“Knowing this is a two-step process for Emery, we are extremely happy that the first surgery was considered a success and we move on to supporting him as he moves into the next step in his recovery,” Real Salt Lake General Manager Craig Waibel said.
Welshman, 24, joined RSL after playing the 2015 season with Real Monarchs. He was second on the team with six goals in 2015 and this year made three appearances, totaling 76 minutes while on loan to the USL club from Real Salt Lake.
Real Salt Lake faces Vancouver Whitecaps FC on Wednesday at B.C. Place in Vancouver, B.C., then hosts the New England Revolution on Saturday at Rio Tinto Stadium. RSL is currently third in the Western Conference at 8-5-5 (29 points).
