Sunday Stephen Undergoes Successful Surgery to Repair Fractured Orbital

Sunny vs SKC 0521

SANDY, Utah (Thursday, June 30, 2016) – Real Salt Lake has announced that MF Sunday Stephen has undergone successful procedures to repair a fractured right orbital, suffered in the first half of Real Salt Lake’s 2-1 win over the New York Red Bulls on June 22.

The surgeries were performed by Dr. Thomas Oberg, Dr. John Bennett and Dr. Stoker at Salt Lake Regional Medical Center on Wednesday.

“It was a significant fracture, but the surgery went great,” said Real Salt Lake Team Orthopedic Surgeon Dr. Andrew Cooper.  “In six weeks he will be evaluated to determine how quickly he can return to the field.”

“Sunny,” 27, is in his first MLS season and has been instrumental in helping Real Salt Lake’s hot start to the year.  He has one goal and one assist from his holding midfield position in 12 starts for RSL this season.

“We are thankful to the doctors at Salt Lake Regional that made this surgery a success,” Real Salt Lake General Manager Craig Waibel said.  “The most important thing is that Sunny gets healthy and we are glad that he should be back in time to contribute for us again this season.”

Real Salt Lake faces D.C. United on Friday night at Rio Tinto Stadium to close out a stretch of six matches in 18 days.  RSL is currently third in the Western Conference at 8-5-3 (27 points).
