Rimando's Penalty Stop Earns Save of the Week Nomination

Nick Rimando and penalty saves have become synonymous.  Particularly when facing the LA Galaxy, against whom he has saved three penalties in the last three seasons, including one on Saturday night in the fifth minute that has him up for the MLSsoccer.com Save of the Week.

One week after winning the weekly honor for a stop against Vancouver Whitecaps FC, Rimando put on an encore performance on Saturday against the LA Galaxy when Steven Gerrard stepped to the penalty spot.  There, fans had flashbacks to previous meetings against the Galaxy.

With RSL leading 1-0 in 2014’s season opener, Rimando stopped a Robbie Keane penalty to ensure victory for the Claret-and-Cobalt.  In 2015, the match came in May and the penalty-taker was Juninho, but the result was the same as Rimando came up with the save.

On Saturday, Gerrard shot to Rimando’s right and “The Wall of the Wasatch” sprung to make the save to keep the match scoreless in the earlygoing.

Rimando has now allowed just 48 goals in 75 career penalty attempts, including a clip of just eight goals in 18 attempts since 2013.
