Real Monarchs Let 3-Goal Lead Slip in Draw with LA Galaxy II

Orellana vs LAG2 0402

Salt Lake City, Utah (Saturday, April 2, 2016)Real Monarchs got out to an early 3-0 lead in the club’s second match of the season Saturday at Rio Tinto Stadium.  But a late surge from LA Galaxy II left the Monarchs with a 3-3 draw as the Monarchs move to 1-0-1 on the season.

The Monarchs got goals from three different players in the first half as DF Tyler Arnone, FW Maikon Orellana and FW Colin Rolfe all scored before halftime.  That 3-0 advantage held until the 80th minute, when LA started its comeback and by the final whistle “Los Dos” had drawn level for a 3-3 draw.

In the 14th minute, the Monarchs got out to the lead when Arnone cracked a ball from distance.  Off a corner, the ball was cleared to Arnone 30 yards out and he took a solid strike landing it into the bottom left corner for the 1-0 lead.

In the 25th minute, Orellana made it 2-0 on a costly mistake from LA goalkeeper Bennett Sneddon.  Orellana attacked his defender up the right side and took a hard angle shot near the six.  Sneddon got his gloves to it and popped the ball up, but not high enough and it bounced into the net.

Goal three came just before half, as Orellana drove to the end line and then sliced a perfect ball across the six, allowing Rolfe to finish for the 3-0 lead at halftime.

The Monarchs continued to dominate into the 80th minute, but then the Galaxy came back.

In the 81st minute it was Ethan Zuback whose shot was parried into the net, pulling the score to 3-1.

As the game neared the end, Los Dos came back with an identical play as Orellana had earlier, this time with LA finishing the ball in the net. LA then gained momentum by scoring two more. The Monarchs finished game two with a draw, 3-3.
