Save of the Week nomination - Nick Rimando

Rimando save of the week 17 0630

Before he left to join the U.S. National Team ahead of the 2015 CONCACAF Gold Cup, Real Salt Lake goalkeeper Nick Rimando made sure to have a gold-standard save last week to earn a nomination for MLSsoccer.com’s Save of the Week.

The league’s all-time shutout leader had seven saves in a midweek clash with the New York Red Bulls that saw RSL pick up a first-half red card, then another to diminish the team to nine men in the second half.  While he was busy throughout the match it was his 52nd minute save on Mike Grella that drew the biggest response.

With New York looking to add to its lead early in the second half, a ball was crossed in from the left side that was deflected to Grella for a first-time volley that he smashed toward the far post only to have the Wall of the Wasatch deny him a second goal of the match.  Rimando sprung low to his right to make the save and now he is up for the weekly award yet again.

Previously, Rimando won the honor in Week 1 and Week 6, with teammate Jeff Attinella winning in Week 8.
