Nat Borchers RSL v Portland 1015

Real Salt Lake has reached the playoffs in every season since 2008, winning the MLS Cup title in 2009 and falling in the final in 2013.  That streak was all but put to rest on Wednesday with a 1-0 loss to the Portland Timbers at Rio Tinto Stadium and Chris Kamrani of the Salt Lake Tribune summarized the pivotal moment of the match.

“Nat Borchers took a knee at the dead-center spot of Rio Tinto Stadium. The longtime Real Salt Lake staple, now clad in Timber green, stared 60 yards north at the guy he used to cover for, as the guy he used to play alongside had just been shown a straight red card, resulting in a penalty kick,” Kamrani wrote for Thursday’s edition.  “It essentially snapped the longest active postseason streak in Major League Soccer Wednesday night in RSL's 1-0 loss to Portland.”

RSL still has two regular season games left on the schedule and could catch Portland in the sixth and final playoff spot, but odds are long, leaving RSL’s match against Municipal in CONCACAF Champions League as the most important of the three remaining on the calendar.
