Luke Mulholland’s goal on Sunday night kept Real Salt Lake’s playoff hopes alive, but the stunning play also earned him a nomination for the MLSsoccer.com Goal of the Week honors.
In the 43rd minute, a Colorado clearance found the feet of Mulholland. He took a touch, then fired a bending shot past Clint Irwin for his third goal of the season.
“On corners now I just hang out on the edge of the box hoping for any scraps and either to put them back into the box or have a shot on goal,” Mulholland explained after the match. “I saw that I had time to take a touch and I hit one. It just sliced into the back of the net, so I’m delighted with that.
The goal put RSL in front for good in a 2-1 victory over the Rapids to pull within three points of the sixth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference. With three matches left to play, RSL is very much in the playoff chase and Mulholland’s goal is a prime reason.
“It was huge, it was one we really needed to keep us alive, keep us in a decent position,” midfielder and captain Kyle Beckerman said. “We felt like we were playing pretty good and we’d get a chance to get back in it. Great free kick from Plata and then a nice, really nice finish from Luke and the rest is history.”
