News Stand: Kavita makes solid first-team debut

Phanuel Kavita preseason

News Stand 6/17/15

In its last two matches, Real Salt Lake Head Coach Jeff Cassar has needed to make a first-half substitution because of an injury at center back.  Last week against the Colorado Rapids, Jamison Olave went down and Aaron Maund stepped into his role.  Then Tuesday night against Seattle Sounders FC 2 in the U.S. Open Cup it was Justen Glad who needed a substitute, leaving Cassar to call on Phanuel Kavita to make his Real Salt Lake debut.

Sean Walker of KSL.com wrote this week about how Kavita adjusted to his first appearance with the MLS club, albeit against a USL opponent.

“The presence of Kavita isn’t a bad one — he was an all-ACC defender at Clemson and former prep standout at Highland High School. But the first-year player has seen the majority of his time this season with Real Monarchs, and now he could be pressed into action, potentially starting as early as Sunday against Sporting Kansas City.”

“It’s getting thin,” Cassar said in Walker’s story. “But I thought Phannie did a great job stepping in, and Aaron Maund is starting to get into a bit of a rhythm. That’s good — but it is getting thin back there, without a doubt.”
