Postgame Quotes
Montreal Impact 4-1 Real Salt Lake
Saputo Stadium; May 16, 2015

Real Salt Lake Head Coach Jeff Cassar
On his team’s start to the match

“At the end of the day, losing the ball in bad areas of the field leaves you exposed defensively and they don’t have to go very far to score. We seemed to do that for the first 45 minutes of the game. The second half I though was better for a good period of it, but again we got a bit stretched out, a little tired and got exposed.”

On his team’s defensive transitions

“Anytime you’re not having a great night on the ball, you got to be in a good defensive shape at least. We weren’t that way when the ball was turned over. That’s something that we talked about and didn’t do a good job of it.”

On RSL’s overall performance

“Anytime you give up a goal off a set-play is not good. Anytime you turn the ball over in poor areas and it takes one pass to get in for a shot, you’re not going to have a good night.”

Real Salt Lake Forward Devon Sandoval
On conceding two goals, one after the other

“It definitely made things difficult, with them scoring the second goal so quickly after the first. I felt like we were in the game the whole time, even when they got their third goal.”

On his goal

“Luis Gil and I had a nice little passing sequence on the side.  Luis laid it off to me and that’s just what was given to me. I came with my left foot, hit it one time going for the back post and it worked.”

Real Salt Lake Goalkeeper Nick Rimando
On RSL’s performance

“I think it was just a bad game for us. We were two steps too far in the beginning, especially in the first half they beat us to the second balls. Two of their goals came off second ball situations. We just got to do better and keep moving.”

On his side’s defending

“It’s not just the back line that gets scored on, it’s the whole team. I think the back line and I could raise our hands and say we could have all done better on all of the goals, but it also starts from the front being tight as a unit and organised. I think they had too much space.”

Montreal Impact Assistant Coach Mauro Biello
On the feeling after getting first win of the season

“Relief, absolutely. We went through a lot of emotions recently and we really wanted to get this win. We saw a great performance from our team, a complete performance, and were very satisfied.”

On the team’s defensive performance

“I think it’s just a mentality. Yes were going to concede goals, but how we react after conceding is what’s important. There were a few nervous moments in the second, but we had to suffer through them and get out of it.  It’s great that we managed to get through it and have a complete performance.”

On the team’s collective approach

“Yes, of course, we talked about being a team and everybody working for their teammates. If were able to work as a team like that, we see results. Tonight we saw that people have great qualities, but when we work together and were ready to battle on the field, were going to get the results.”

Montreal Impact Defender Bakary Soumare
On the second half

“The first 10 minutes of the second half were hard. We need to be more concentrated when we get into the second half. All in all, the most important thing today was to win. It’s only the beginning; we need to continue to win to go up in the standings.”

On the future

“We want to have a great season, and that starts with winning, winning at home, winning away. The MLS is a long season; you can’t be good in one game and bad in the other. We need to be consistent. We’ll see.”

Montreal Impact Defender Laurent Ciman
On the team’s performance

“We started off shaky, but quickly took the game into our hands. I think we played great today. Everybody expressed their potential, and that we know how to play soccer, and that does good to our confidence.”

On play in possession

“There was a lot of movement, especially off the ball, and that makes all the difference. Having the ball is great, but when there’s no movement off the ball it’s very hard to circulate the ball. Today we did a good job off the ball. There’s no use running with the ball, we played one, two touch soccer, and you saw our quality.”
