News Stand: RSL faces Impact team trying to find its identity

Ignacio Piatti Montreal

News Stand 5/12/15

The Montreal Impact may have reached the CONCACAF Champions League final, but Jason de Vos of TSN thinks they still have work to do to be competitive in Major League Soccer.

Joining #OnFrame on Monday, de Vos noted some top-notch talent like Ignacio Piatti but thinks the Impact need to add more around him to compete for a playoff spot.

“I look at the Impact squad and I just wonder where the goals are going to come from.  Piatti is a very nice player.  I think he’ll be an excellent signing for them.  He’s exciting to watch.  He’s got a great turn of pace.  He can run at people,” de Vos said in a lengthy and informative segment.  “But you look at who he has around him and he just doesn’t have the supporting cast.”

Montreal does have three forwards who have scored goals in MLS.  Dominic Oduro has had two seasons with 12 or more goals, Jack McInerney had 12 goals in 2013 and Kenny Cooper has twice netted 18 goals, most recently in 2012 with the New York Red Bulls.  However, de Vos says the widespread belief is that the Impact will seek big-money talent from overseas in the summer to replace the scoring lost with the retirement of Marco di Vaio.

“There’s a belief in Canada that the Montreal Impact are looking to make a big splash in the summer transfer window when the European season is over by bringing in another Marco di Vaio type player and paying them big money as a Designated Player, but I’m not sure that is the answer,” he said.  “As we’ve seen before in other teams in Major League Soccer, signing one or two DPs doesn’t make you a complete team.”
