U.S.-Chile: Rimando's unbeaten run ends at 17

Nick Rimando US National Team

All good things must come to an end.  That was the case in Rancagua, Chile, where Real Salt Lake goalkeeper Nick Rimando’s unbeaten run with the U.S. National team was halted on Wednesday in a 3-2 defeat against No. 14-ranked Chile in the first friendly of 2015.

Brek Shea and Jozy Altidore scored first-half goals for the U.S., but the 3-5-2 formation deployed by Jurgen Klinsmann couldn’t hold the lead and Chile rallied back from at 2-1 halftime deficit to find the equalizer in the 66th minute and the match-winner in the 75th minute, both from Mark Gonzalez.

Rimando finished the match with two saves on five Chilean shots on goal.  He previously had been unbeaten in the 12 years since he made his U.S. National Team debut in November of 2002.  He is now 10-1-2 all-time, with the U.S. posting a 13-1-3 overall record in his 17 appearances.

RSL midfielder Luis Gil was included on the 23-man roster for the trip, but did not make the bench for the 18-man gameday roster.

The USA will now prepare for its first home match of the year when it hosts Panama at the StubHub Center in Carson, California, on February 8.  Kickoff is at 2 p.m. MT and will be broadcast on ESPN.
