Rimando takes second place finish in Goalkeeper of the Year race in stride

Nick Rimando v. D.C. United - 08.09.14

Nick Rimando has achieved many things in his illustrious Major League Soccer career.

He is the all-time leader with 115 career shutouts.  A two-time MLS Cup winner.  An MLS Cup MVP in 2009.  A four-time MLS All-Star.  And a two-time MLS Save of the Year recipient.

Yet for all of his feats, his name has never been called for the Allstate Goalkeeper of the Year honor.  This year, the award went to D.C. United’s Bill Hamid, with Rimando a close second in the race.

The 35-year-old Rimando led the league with a 1.04 goals against average while posting a 13-4-7 record with seven shutouts.  He missed eight matches while away with the U.S. National Team, including a stretch of six matches when he was at the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.

Rimando took the defeat in stride, posting a heartfelt message on through social media.

“Congrats to Bill, well deserved.  And just to be clear I appreciated all the love and support the last couple days on (social media), it doesn’t go unnoticed but I don’t want you to be mad I didn’t get (Goalkeeper of the Year).  I don’t play for awards, I play for my FAMILY, fans, teammates, coaches, city, country, and that RSL crest on my chest.  I’ve been the 5’10 GK my whole life so nothing is expected.  I’ve lived my dream in 2014, I’m healthy and thankful for everything I have.”

Rimando has played 15 seasons in MLS, the last eight with Real Salt Lake.
