RSL Reserves - 04.29.14

SANDY, Utah – The Real Salt Lake Reserves (0-0-1, 1 point) drew Chivas USA Reserves (0-3-1, 1 point) 1-1 in its first 2014 MLS Reserve League match of 2014 at America First Field in Sandy, Utah.

Real Salt Lake got on the board first, taking the lead in the 42nd minute through FW Devon Sandoval. The Claret-and-Cobalt were unable to keep the lead though as Chivas USA pulled one back in the 51st minute to earn the draw.

The first half saw a handful of chances for both sides, the first coming in the fourth minute after RSL earned an early corner kick. RSL MF Sebastian Velasquez took the corner which found RSL DF Carlos Salcedo at the top of the box, who then sent a volleyed shot just over the crossbar.

Real Salt Lake had another decent chance in the 20th minute. RSL MF Jordan Allen sent a cross into the box which was picked up by RSL DF Abdoulie Mansally on the left side. Mansally laid off a pass to RSL FW Olmes Garcia at the top of the box, who nicely turned and sent a strong shot just past the far post.

Chivas USA’s best chance in the first half came in the 35th minute. Chivas USA MF Marco Delgado sent a low cross in front of goal which RSL was unable to clear, resulting in a scramble in the box. Chivas USA FW Kristopher Tyrpak attempted to flick the ball into the net but RSL GK Jeff Attinella was there to eventually smother the ball.

Sandoval put the Claret-and-Cobalt up by one in the 42nd minute. The play started with a great defensive effort from Garcia to allow Velasquez to pick up the ball in Chivas USA’s half. Velasquez then found Mansally on the left flank who then laid it off for Sandoval in the middle of the penalty area. The New Mexico native made no mistake with his shot, one-timing it past Chivas USA GK Tim Melia.

The second half got off to an energetic start, with RSL getting a dangerous look in the 48th minute. Sandoval played fantastic flick-on header at the halfway line for Garcia, who then sprinted down the field managing to get a left-footed shot on frame from inside the penalty box. Chivas USA’s Melia came up big though, making a diving one-handed save.

The Southern California side managed to find the equalizer three minutes later. Tyrpak received the ball on the left side of the box and sent in a low cross which found Chivas USA FW Caleb Calvert. Calvert managed to get a shot off using the outside of his foot to sneak one past Attinella.

Attinella went on to preserve the draw in the 66th minute with a fantastic penalty kick save on Chivas USA MF Martin Rivero. RSL-Arizona Academy Player Fito Ovalle made a late tackle in the box to award the penalty to the California side. Attinella was able to read Rivero correctly, diving to his left to make a one-handed stop. But the action didn’t stop there, as Calvert was able to get the follow-up shot but volleyed the chance off the crossbar.

Both sides created opportunities in the match’s final 20 minutes but none were able to find the back of the net. Calvert was able to get off another shot from inside box in the 72nd minute, but Salcedo was there to make the block with his body. Sandoval saw a pair of chances in the 83rd minute, blasting a shot from the top of the 18-yard box that was blocked and managing to get the follow-up shot which went straight to Melia.

Real Salt Lake will return to MLS action on Saturday, when it will take on Chicago Fire at 6:30 p.m. MT at Toyota Park. Saturday’s match will be broadcast live on CW30, ESPN 700 AM and 102.3 La Gran D FM. The RSL Reserves will take on Colorado Rapids Reserves on May 18 at 11:00 a.m. at America First Field in Sandy, Utah.
