International Recap: Beckerman, Beltran and Rimando start for US

US Starting XI v. Mexico - 04.02.13

SANDY, Utah – Three of RSL’s four internationals saw action for the U.S. Men’s National Team in its 2-2 draw against Mexico on Wednesday night, with Nick Rimando going the full 90 in net and Kyle Beckerman and Tony Beltran starting and turning in solid performances before getting subbed off together in the second half. RSL midfielder Luis Gil dressed but did not play for the U.S.

Beckerman likely locked down a spot at this summer’s World Cup with his solid performance. The Claret-and-Cobalt Captain was very solid at the base of the U.S. midfield, distributing neatly, defending effectively and positioning himself well before coming off for Maurice Edu in the 72nd minute. Beckerman’s disciplined performance allowed midfielder Michael Bradley – widely considered Man of the Match – to roam forward with abandon, something he hasn’t been able to do when paired with other players in central midfield.

A late call-up into U.S. camp, Beltran also turned in a solid shift on Wednesday night. RSL’s steady right back defended well and was good in possession for the U.S., with his highlight coming in the 28th minute, when he curled in an excellent cross that Bradley flicked on to forward Chris Wondolowski for the U.S.’s second goal.

Rimando was his usual stellar self in net on Wednesday, making several big saves and controlling the area. RSL’s veteran ‘keeper was far from at fault for either of Mexico’s goals. His biggest play came in the 53rd minute, when he acrobatically tipped a dangerous looking header over the bar. Rimando had four saves total and remained perfect as a starter for the USMNT, improving to 10-0-1 in his international career.

Wednesday's match marked the third time since the start of 2013 that three RSL players featured in a single game for the USMNT. Only two other clubs have accomplished that feat during the same span, with Mexican side Club Tijuana and Sporting Kansas City both having three players feature in one USMNT match one time since the start of 2013.

Beckerman, Beltran, Gil and Rimando will return to Salt Lake City on Thursday. All four players are expected to be available for selection for Saturday’s MLS cup 2013 rematch at Sporting Kansas City.
