Wingert suspended extra game by MLS Disciplinary Committee

Chris Wingert v. Sporting Kansas City - 7.20.13

SANDY, Utah – Real Salt Lake DF Chris Wingert has been suspended an extra game and fined by the MLS Disciplinary Committee for violent conduct in the first minute of RSL’s July 20 loss to Sporting Kansas City.

Wingert received a yellow card on the play, but the Committee unanimously determined that his actions endangered the safety of his opponent, Sporting KC FW Kei Kamara. Wingert is suspended for two games – one for receiving two yellow cards in Saturday’s game, and one imposed by the Committee. Wingert will miss RSL’s Saturday match at the New York Red Bulls and its Aug. 3 contest at the Colorado Rapids while serving his suspension. He will be eligible to return to MLS play on yellow card accumulation warning on Aug. 10, when RSL will host the Houston Dynamo at Rio Tinto Stadium. Wingert will also be eligible for the Claret-and-Cobalt’s Aug. 7 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Semifinal match against the Portland Timbers.

Regular Real Salt Lake DF Tony Beltran is also suspended for his next MLS match after being red carded in the Claret-and-Cobalt’s 1-0 win at Toronto FC on June 29. Beltran has been with the U.S. Men’s National Team in the CONCACAF Gold Cup since that game and has yet to serve his suspension. The U.S. takes on Honduras in the Gold Cup Semifinals in Dallas on Wednesday. Should it advance, the U.S. will take on the winner of the Mexico-Panama semifinal in the Gold Cup Final in Chicago on Sunday.

Real Salt Lake will return to MLS action this Saturday, when it will take on Eastern Conference power the New York Red Bulls at Red Bull Arena. Saturday’s match will kick at 5:00 p.m. MT and will be broadcast live on ABC 4, ESPN700 AM and 102.3 FM La Gran D/1600 AM.
