Reserves Recap: RSL 2-3 Chivas USA

Enzo Martinez v. Chivas USA Reserves - 05.20.13

CARSON, Calif. – The Real Salt Lake Reserves (3-2-2, 11 points, West #1) couldn’t overcome a three-goal first half deficit at the Chivas USA Reserves (1-0-0, 3 points, West T-7) on Monday, falling 3-2 to the Goats at the Home Depot Center in MLS Reserve League action.

The Claret-and-Cobalt conceded in the eighth, 23rd and 28th minutes before pulling goals back in the 53rd and 91st minutes.

MF Carlos Alvarez opened the scoring for Chivas USA. The second overall pick in the 2013 MLS SuperDraft, Alvarez made a mazy run through the left side of the field before firing a 15-yard left-footer past RSL GK Josh Saunders and inside the far post.

RSL MF John Stertzer dislocated his right shoulder in the 20th minute and had to be subbed off for RSL-AZ Academy DF Ive Burnett in the 23rd.

Chivas USA doubled its advantage in the 23rd minute. Newly acquired MF Gabriel Farfan ran onto a ball in the right side of the area, cutting it back onto his left foot before firing a low shot inside the far post.

The Goats made it 3-0 in the 28th minute. FW Jose Manuel Rivera collected a MF Laurent Courtois cross in the right side of the area, taking a touch before hitting a low drive off of a sliding RSL player and inside the left post.

RSL responded well after the break, turning the pressure on and creating several good chances. The hard work paid off in the 53rd minute, when MF David Viana tapped home a penalty kick rebound after seeing his initial effort saved by Chivas USA GK Patrick McClain. Viana played a big role in setting up the penalty, running onto a ball on the right side and crossing to MF Abdoulie Mansally, who was taken down after collecting the ball in the middle of the box.

Saunders came up big in the 75th minute, stopping a penalty kick after DF Lovel Palmer was whistled for a foul in the box. Saunders was all over the spot kick, diving to his left to block – and hold – Chivas USA MF Giovani Casillas’s attempt.

Mansally pulled one back for RSL in the 91st minute, running onto a through ball in the left side of the area, turning and ripping a left-footed shot off the top-left-corner and into the back of the net. RSL pushed hard for an equalizer following Mansally’s goal, but couldn’t quite find one.

The Claret-and-Cobalt will return to Utah on Monday evening, beginning preparations for this Saturday’s MLS match against the Chicago Fire at Rio Tinto Stadium on Wednesday. The RSL Reserves will return to action on Sunday, June 2, when they’ll take on the San Jose Earthquakes Reserves at America First Field in Sandy, Utah.
