Reserves Recap: RSL 0-0 Phoenix FC

Velasquez at Phoenix

TEMPE, Ariz. – The Real Salt Lake Reserves played USL Pro side Phoenix FC to a scoreless draw in MLS Reserve League action at Sun Devil Soccer Stadium in Tempe, Ariz. on Saturday night.

Saturday’s draw is the second time this year that the RSL Reserves tied Phoenix FC 0-0. RSL and Phoenix played to a scoreless draw on April 22 in front of a large crowd of 8,263 at Rio Tinto Stadium. The two matches between RSL and Phoenix were arranged as part of the groundbreaking partnership agreed to this offseason between MLS and USL Pro.

The defenses dominated Saturday’s game, with neither side able to create much in front of net throughout the match. Phoenix had the best chance of the game in the 38th minute. FW Travis Bowen got on the end of a cross in the left side of the box, flicking a header toward the far post that RSL GK Jeff Attinella deflected out for a corner kick.

RSL created a series of decent opportunities in the second half, but couldn’t quite create any clear-cut chances.

Unfortunately, the Claret-and-Cobalt didn’t make it out of Saturday’s game unscathed, as DF Kwame Watson-Siriboe had to leave the match in the ninth minute due to injury. RSL-Arizona Academy DF Justen Glad replaced Watson-Siriboe in the lineup. Glad was one of three RSL-AZ players who featured for the Claret-and-Cobalt Reserves on Saturday, with FW Benji Lopez and MF Andrew Brody entering the game in the second half.

The Claret-and-Cobalt will return to MLS regular season action next Saturday, June 22, when it will host Western Conference rival Seattle Sounders FC at 7:30 p.m. MT at Rio Tinto Stadium. A limited number of tickets are still available to Saturday’s match and can be purchased at the Rio Tinto Stadium box office, online at www.RealSaltLake.com/Tickets or over the phone at 801-727-2700.

The Real Salt Lake Reserves don’t play again until Tuesday, July 15, when the Claret-and-Cobalt will host Vancouver Whitecaps FC Reserves at 11:00 a.m. MT at America First Field in Sandy, Utah.
