According to a tweet from MLSsoccer.com Chicago reporter Anthony Zilis, U.S. Men's National Team manager Jurgen Klinsmann indicated on Wednesday at a Gold Cup press conference in Chicago that Real Salt Lake goalkeeper Nick Rimando will back-up Aston Villa's Brad Guzan for the U.S. while first-choice 'keeper Tim Howard is out injured.
Howard will miss the U.S.'s World Cup Qualifiers on March 22 against Costa Rica and on March 26 at Mexico due to a back injury.
According to a second tweet from Zilis, Chicago Fire goalie Sean Johnson and D.C. United 'keeper Bill Hamid are fighting for the third spot behind Guzan and Rimando.
While this could obviously change, it seems that - for now - Rimando has a lock on the third goalkeeper spot behind Howard and Guzan. Should he retain that spot, he'll likely get called up for the U.S.'s remaining Hexagonal matches as well as for this summer's CONCACAF Gold Cup.
Rimando will be honored before Saturday's 4:00 p.m. home opener against Colorado for becoming the second player in MLS history to register 100 career regular season shutouts. The 33-year-old 'keeper earned his 100th clean sheet in RSL's season opening 2-0 win at San Jose on March 3. He is also up for two Governor's State of Sport Awards -
