Gil named to CONCACAF U-20 Championship Best XI

Luis v. San Jose - 03.03.13

Real Salt Lake midfielder Luis Gil was named to the CONCACAF U-20 Championship Best XI team on Sunday night, earning the honor despite missing the U.S. U-20’s final two matches to be with Real Salt Lake for Sunday’s season opener.

Gil played a big role in the U.S.’s qualification for this summer’s FIFA U-20 World Cup, scoring two goals and adding two assists in three games for Tab Ramos’ side. The 19-year-old California native returned to Real Salt Lake following last Tuesday’s Quarterfinal win over Canada that put the U.S. into the World Cup in Turkey.

Gil was joined on the CONCACAF U-20 Championship Best XI by U.S. teammates Jose Villarreal (L.A. Galaxy) and Wil Trapp (Columbus Crew). The U.S. finished second in the Puebla, Mexico tournament, losing 3-1 to champions Mexico after extra time in Sunday night’s final.

A fourth-year pro, Gil played all 90 minutes in RSL’s 2-0 win at San Jose on Sunday night, nearly scoring a goal midway through the first half following a nifty cutback in the box.

Gil and Real Salt Lake will return to action on Saturday, when the Claret-and-Cobalt will take on D.C. United at RFK Stadium.
