Preview: RSL at San Jose Earthquakes

Nick Rimando v. San Jose Earthquakes - 03.15.14

SANDY, Utah – Real Salt Lake continues its road schedule this Saturday, when it heads to California to take on San Jose Earthquakes at 8:30 p.m. MT at Buck Shaw Stadium. Saturday’s match will be broadcast live on CW30 and ESPN 700 AM, and 102.3 La Gran D FM.

Real Salt Lake will look to regain its footing in the Western Conference after getting bumped down to fourth-place after LA Galaxy defeated D.C. United 4-1 this past Wednesday. The Claret-and-Cobalt posts an 11-5-9 record and total of 42 points, tying the club on points with FC Dallas but claiming one-fewer win than the Texas side. Saturday’s match will provide RSL with an opportunity to pick up much needed points in order to stay in the race for the Supporters’ Shield. Real Salt Lake currently sits sixth in the league, tied on points with Dallas and Sporting Kansas City, while both LA and D.C. claim 43 and Seattle sit atop the table with 45 points with a game in hand on RSL.

Real Salt Lake enters this weekend’s matchup coming off a 2-1 loss to FC Dallas at Toyota Stadium last Friday. The defeat ended the Claret-and-Cobalt’s unbeaten run at six games and its win streak at three – RSL had gone 4-0-2 in MLS play heading into the clash in Frisco. The Claret-and-Cobalt fell behind in the second half despite having a man advantage, when FCD DF Je-Vaughn Watson scored off a corner kick in the 50th minute. Dallas went on to double its lead on a counter attack through MF Fabian Castillo in the 74th minute. Real Salt Lake was able to pull one back in stoppage time through FW Olmes Garcia but it proved not enough to complete the comeback.

Real Salt Lake and San Jose Earthquakes have met once before this year, a wild 3-3 draw at Buck Shaw Stadium on March 15. San Jose took an early lead, getting a sixth minute goal from FW Chris Wondolowski to go up 1-0. RSL hit back with three unanswered goals before halftime, with Captain Kyle Beckerman equalizing with a fantastic 11th minute strike before FW Joao Plata scored in the 32nd and MF Luke Mulholland tallied in first half stoppage time to give RSL a 3-1 lead at the break. Unfortunately, the Claret-and-Cobalt couldn’t hold onto its advantage, with DF Victor Bernardez scoring in the 75th and 95th to give the Quakes a result.

Real Salt Lake has an even history against the Quakes, posting a 7-7-6 all-time regular season record against the California side. The Claret-and-Cobalt has a 4-4-2 all-time regular season road record against the Bay Area club.

Saturday’s contest could see the debut of new Real Salt Lake FW Sebastian Jaime. The Argentine striker joined the club earlier this week and will travel with the club to San Jose, but the newcomer will likely only serve as an option off the bench. Jaime was acquired from Chilean Primera División club Unión Española earlier this month.

The Earthquakes enter Saturday’s match coming off a 4-2 loss to Philadelphia Union at PPL Park last Sunday. San Jose is now winless in their last four games and sit eighth in the Western Conference with a 6-10-7 record and total of 25 points.

The Claret-and-Cobalt will return home after its match in the Bay Area, playing host to Western Conference foe FC Dallas on Sept. 6 at Rio Tinto Stadium at 8:00 p.m. MT. Tickets to the RSL-Dallas contest can be purchased at the Rio Tinto Stadium box office, online at //www.realsaltlake.com/Tickets or over the phone at 801-727-2700.
