History:

Founded in 1984, Tauro FC is the most decorated club in Panamanian league history, winning nine titles since the league started in 1988. Colloquially known as Los Toros de Pedregal, Tauro is making its fourth appearance in the CONCACAF Champions League, having participated in the 2008-09, 2010-11 and 2011-12 tournaments.

Tauro – which is joined by fellow Panamanian club Chorillo FC in the CCL – has a number of Panamanian internationals on the squad, including recent national team call-ups Leonel Parrish, Marcos Sanchez, Ricardo Amor and Jean McLean. The club also has a Panamanian feel on the bench, with manager Juan Carlos Cubilla one of just three Panamanians currently managing in their domestic league.

CONCACAF:

Qualification method: 2012 Panamanian Clausura champion

Previous CONCACAF Champions League appearances: 3 (2008-09, 2010-11, 2011-12)

Tauro is no stranger to the CONCACAF Champions League, having participated in three of the first four editions of the tournament, only missing out on the 2009-10 competition. Tauro qualified for the 2012-13 tournament – which will be the club’s third straight and fourth overall CCL appearance – by defeating Panamanian counterparts Chepo 2-1 in the 2012 Clausura Final on May 22.

Tauro’s best CCL performance came in the 2008-09 tournament, when they finished third in Group D, only missing out on the Championship Round after losing a head-to-head tiebreaker with the second-place Puerto Rico Islanders. Tauro also made the Group Stage in the 2011-12 CCL, but finished in fourth place in Group C behind Mexican club Pumas UNAM and MLS sides Toronto FC and FC Dallas. The club’s worst CCL finish was in 2010-11, when they lost to Guatemalan side Marathón in the Preliminary Round and failed to advance to the Group Stage.

Stadium: Estadio Rommel Fernandez

Tauro hosts all of its matches at the Estadio Rommel Fernandez in Panama City, Panama. Seating 32,000, the multi-purpose facility has a grass surface and is the home to the Panamanian national team. RSL GK Nick Rimando is familiar with the stadium, having played there during the first half of the U.S. national team’s 1-0 victory over Panama in a friendly match on Jan. 25, 2012.
