Alfred & Anna Murillo to Be Honored as Saturday’s RSL/American Express “Hero Among Us”

Real Salt Lake and American Express are proud to recognize Alfred and Anna Murillo, as Saturday’s recipients of the “Heroes Among Us” honor. Twenty years ago, the Murillos came across two refugees from Sudan trying to survive from scratch in a new country. After helping to educate, clothe, shelter and feed the young refugees in need, Alfred and Anna realized there were many others with similar needs that were not being met, and by partnering with others they strove to make a greater impact by starting a non-profit organization called the Utah Dream Center.

From those humble beginnings, the Utah Dream Center has now increased to around 1,200 people, helping refugees from all over the globe, including Nepal, Indonesia, Ethiopia, Congo, Turkey and Bosnia.  The group expanded the program even further to assist those struggling with drugs, gang affiliation and those that are simply feeling lost and forgotten in their new surroundings, including newcomers settling in Ogden, Provo, Kearns, Liberty Park and Glendale.
