ROSTERS NAMED
FOR SECOND ANNUAL RSL/ZIONS BANK LIGAS ALL-STAR GAME, PRESENTED BY EL
OBSERVADOR DE UTAH
Liga O.C.D. and La Super Liga de Utah to Team up
against Liga Mexico-Utah/La Liga Premier de Ogden Combined Squad for Saturday’s Showdown at Rio Tinto Stadium
SANDY, Utah (Wednesday, August 24, 2011) – The final rosters for the Real Salt Lake/Zions Bank Ligas All-Star Game, presented by El Observador de Utah, have been set in advance of this Saturday’s second annual event, with kickoff from Rio Tinto Stadium set for 1:00 p.m. MT.
After presidents from all four participating Ligas – Liga Premier de Ogden, Liga Mexico-Utah, Liga O.C.D., and La Super-Liga de Utah – nominated the cream of the crop from across their teams, fans were allowed to vote during a month-long process featuring ballots in El Observador de Utah and via text messaging courtesy of Verizon Wireless. One coach and nine players from each squad have been selected for the showcase event, which will be free and open to the public this Saturday in Sandy. This year’s contest will see Liga O.C.D. and La Super Liga de Utah combine to form Team White, while players from La Liga Premier of Ogden and Liga Mexico-Utah will merge to create Team Red.
To further foster the communal feel of the Ligas All-Star Game, a referee from each area Liga has been invited to officiate the contest, while two youth Ligas – Liga Victor’s Tires Kids and Liga Santa Teresita – will take part as “Dream Team” representatives, ball kids, and halftime “mini-game” participants.
In the build up to this weekend’s game, Real Salt Lake’s Official Spanish-language Media Partner, Adelante Media Group, will host players, coaches and presidents from each Liga to preview the contest. Supporters can tune into Mega TV’s “Mega Noticias” program on Channel 23 / Comcast 123 at 10:00 p.m. MT and the “Hablando de Deportes” segments on ESPN Deportes 1600-AM throughout the remainder of the week to get the participants’ thoughts on what it means to be a part of this annual community event.
While last year’s debut was part of a doubleheader with Real Salt Lake, this year’s Ligas All-Star Game is a stand-alone event, allowing many of Utah’s top amateur players and coaches to have the biggest stage for soccer in Utah all to themselves. In last year’s inaugural edition, Team North – which was comprised of Liga Premier De Ogden and Liga Latinoamericana – defeated Team West (Liga O.C.D. and Liga Mexico-Utah) by a 3-1 margin to capture bragging rights throughout the following year.
