REAL SALT LAKE FALLS 0-1 AT HOUSTON IN MLS RESERVE LEAGUE PLAY
Dynamo Reserves
Forward Jason Garey’s 69th Minute Goal Good Enough to Down Visitors
HOUSTON (Sunday,
August 21, 2011) - Just like the main
squad the night before, the Houston Dynamo Reserves moved into second
place on Sunday with a 1-0 win over the Real Salt Lake Reserves at Robertson
Stadium. Houston (4-2-0, 12 pts.) now sits second behind the Chicago Fire
in the Central/Mountain Division of the MLS Reserve League, while Real Salt
Lake (2-4-0, 6 pts.) remains in fourth-place in the six-team division with four
games remaining in the season.
Houston controlled much of the match, outshooting Salt Lake 13-5, but did not
break through until a Jason Garey tally in the 69th minute, his third
Reserve League goal of the year. Tyler Deric made two saves in goal for
his fourth shutout, as all four Dynamo wins in Reserve League play have come by
a 1-0 margin.
Real Salt Lake created the game's first quality scoring chance in the 13th
minute, when a well-placed through ball put Chris Agorsor in behind the
Houston defense. Agorsor took a touch around Deric but could not control the
ball before it crossed the endline.
Houston responded with several chances from Josue Soto and Calen Carr.
RSL goalkeeper Kyle Reynish made a kick save on a Soto shot in the 17th
minute, and he also foiled Carr on two different occasions, forcing him to chip
high in the 22nd minute and saving a close-range shot in the 30th minute.
Deric made his first save in the match in the 33rd minute, diving to his left
to punch away a long-range shot from Jean Alexandre. Minutes later, Soto
fired a dangerous ball toward the back post, but a sliding Carr could not
connect. In the 39th minute, Real Salt Lake created another chance when Collen
Warner chipped a free kick into the box, and Paulo Jr. angled a
header on target, but Deric dove to make the stop.
After a slow start to the second half, Houston broke ahead in the 69th minute
when a Kofi Sarkodie through ball found Adam Moffat running behind
the Salt Lake back line. Alone with substitute goalkeeper Tim Melia,
Moffat squared the ball for Garey to tap into an empty net for his third
reserve goal of the season.
Late in the game, Dynamo Academy players Alan Arellano and Bradley
Bourgeois made their Reserve League debuts and helped Houston hold on for
the 1-0 win. Real Salt Lake also saw two members of its RSL-Arizona Academy
take the field during the match, with Julio Alarcon earning the start at
right back and Ricardo Velasco entering in the hopes of providing an
attacking spark in the 82nd minute. In addition, the Utah side had a
look at three non-rostered players during the contest – Leone Cruz, Nelio,
and Paulo da Silva.
Real Salt Lake will head to the eastern boundary of the Central/Mountain
Division for its next Reserve League contest on Tuesday, Sept. 6, when
the Claret-and-Cobalt will attempt to make up some ground on the Chicago Fire
Reserves. Kickoff at Toyota Park in Bridgeview, Ill., has not yet been
announced.
