RSL “Game Note” of the Match: Need a Result, Stat
With a win or draw at home vs. New York on Saturday, Real Salt Lake would avoid a third consecutive MLS loss – something that has happened just once since Jason Kreis became head coach in May of 2007 … After 10 MLS, U.S. Open Cup and exhibition games in May/June of 2007, and during an active period of player movement in and out of Kreis’ system, RSL suffered a home loss to Toronto FC on July 4, following that up with road losses at Columbus and Kansas City … If you include all competitions, RSL has not lost three consecutive matches since May of 2008, when road losses at Colorado and Dallas were followed by an Open Cup loss at Columbus – the only time in Kreis’ three full seasons at the helm with back-to-back-to-back losses.
RSL History v. New York
The famed “Nor’easter Game” at Giants Stadium that kicked off Real Salt Lake’s inaugural season back in April 2005 set the tone for a somewhat bizarre series between RSL and New York, which the Utah side trails narrowly by a 2-3-7 margin in regular season play. After Real Salt Lake went winless against the Red Bulls in their first 10 overall meetings through early 2009 (0-4-6) – including a heartbreaking 0-1 defeat in the 2008 Western Conference Championship at Rio Tinto Stadium – the Utah side has gone 2-0-1 since, including a 1-0 victory last Sept. 4 in their most recent meeting in Sandy that bumped the Claret-and-Cobalt’s undefeated home mark in regular season vs. New York to 2-0-4. The two sides will close out their 2011 home-and-home series on Wednesday, Sept. 21 at Red Bull Arena in Harrison, N.J.
