RSL “Game Note” of the Match: Feels Like the First Time
Debuts in new stadiums have not been kind to Real Salt Lake during its first seven seasons of play, as RSL’s overall record when playing at a venue for the first time, including during its 2005 inaugural season, stands at 1-15-5 heading into Wednesday’s debut at LIVESTRONG Sporting Park. In the 11 games played at a stadium new to Major League Soccer since RSL’s inception (not counting Rio Tinto Stadium), the Utah side’s mark is 1-6-4, with the last occasion coming back on April 30, when RSL fell 0-1 to the Portland Timbers at JELD-WEN Field.
RSL History v. Sporting Kansas City
Since joining Major League Soccer in 2005, Real Salt Lake has played Sporting Kansas City – known until 2010 as the Kansas City Wizards – nearly even, with the Claret-and-Cobalt posting a 4-5-3 record across their 12 meetings, during which each team has scored 18 goals. Real Salt Lake has gone 1-3-2 in the greater Kansas City area, with the six previous meetings split evenly between Arrowhead Stadium in Missouri (0-2-1) and CommunityAmerica Ballpark on the Kansas side (1-1-1). In the two meetings last year, RSL posted an overwhelming 4-1 victory at Rio Tinto Stadium on May 29, followed by a 1-1 draw that took place nearly one year ago on Aug. 7.
