RSL “Game Note” of the Match: Time to Make a Move

While Real Salt Lake has played fewer games to this point than any other Major League Soccer side, the next 11 games (6 home, 5 away) in June/July/August will define the campaign for Jason Kreis’ side, which has battled key injuries, Gold Cup absences and CONCACAF Champions League disappointment since late April …

Of the next 11 MLS opponents, only 3 have a winning record entering this week (7/9 v DAL; 7/23 v SJ; 8/6 v NY), while one team is an even .500 (7/30 v CLB) … RSL faces all of those sides at home, while the remaining eight foes are currently sub-.500 squads (TOR, NE, @VAN, @KC, @TOR, @HOU and @CHV) … RSL has managed only two points in its last two games against sub-.500 sides DC and CHI.

RSL History v. Toronto FC

While the series between the two sides during MLS regular season play is split down the middle (3-3-2 all-time, 3-1-0 at home), the two clubs met a total of four times last season due to meetings in the Group Stage of the CONCACAF Champions League. Over the course of the 2010 season, the Claret-and-Cobalt amassed an undefeated 2-0-2 record against the league’s original Canadian side and protected their home field by winning both contests at Rio Tinto Stadium.

In their regular season meeting in Sandy on May 1, RSL jumped out to an early 2-0 lead thanks to goals from Jamison Olave (14’) and Andy Williams (42’) before surviving Dwayne De Rosario’s 88th minute penalty kick to preserve a 2-1 win.  After a scoreless tie in their other league match at BMO Field on Aug. 28, the two sides met in Group A play at Rio Tinto Stadium on Sept. 15, this time with the Reds striking first through Maicon Santos just eight minutes in. However, it was all Claret-and-Cobalt from there on out, as RSL would score four times [Beckerman (21’), Olave (40’), Saborio (69’) and Paulo Jr (80’)] to go on a relatively easy 4-1 victory. The Utah side would head north once again on Sept. 29 for the Group A return match, a Javier Morales free kick goal (67’) evening the proceedings and securing the 1-1 draw that propelled RSL into the knockout stages of the CCL in the team’s first-ever appearance in the regional club championship.
