Real Salt Lake extend Kreis' contract through 2013

Real Salt Lake announced Thursday they'll retire the No. 9 jersey of Jason Kreis, but the move didn't come without controversy.

Real Salt Lake has come to an agreement with head coach Jason Kreis on a contract extension that will see Kreis remain at the helm of the 2009 MLS Cup champions through the 2013 season, RSL president Bill Manning announced on Thursday.

Kreis made the transition from player to coach during the 2007 season and has proven successful nearly from the start. At the time, he was the youngest coach in league history, and took his squad to the MLS Cup title just two years after taking over and transforming the squad.

"As I’ve said many times in the nearly seven years since he became the face of our franchise, Jason continues to fit the profile of every great leader I have worked with throughout my career,” said RSL founder Dave Checketts. “The vote of confidence that ownership and management give today to Jason speaks for itself. Not only is he one of the best young coaches in MLS, he’s one of the best period. We are thrilled to have him here for a very long time.”

Checketts also announced that Real Salt Lake will retire Kreis’ No. 9 jersey in a special ceremony on Independence Day. The team will be facing the New England Revolution that evening in a match that will be televised live nationwide on ESPN2.

Kreis indicated that he looks forward to continuing the journey with his club.

"When I was hired nearly four years ago, I stated that it was time for action, that I was embracing a complete and utter challenge, undertaking tremendous responsibility,” said Kreis. “We have enjoyed some success here now at Real Salt Lake and the entire organization – players, coaches, staff, ownership, management and most importantly, the fans – believes, as I do, that ‘The Team is the Star.’

"Everyone involved in establishing and raising our expectations continues to work towards earning championships, and no one takes that responsibility lightly. I am thrilled to have the opportunity to continue in this great endeavor."
