SANDY, Utah / CASA GRANDE, Ariz. (Friday, December 3, 2010) – The ever-shrinking offseason for Major League Soccer has begun, but there is still plenty of news surrounding Real Salt Lake on the player development side of the Utah club’s operations:

MF Luis Gil Comes off Bench in Generation adidas’ 2-1 Win over Real Madrid Reserves;
Real Salt Lake MF Luis Gil has joined 18 fellow members of the MLS Generation adidas program on a 10-day trip to Madrid, Spain, a journey which began with an overnight flight on Monday and will include exhibition contests against reserve sides from a trio of Spanish First and Second Division clubs before their return stateside next Thursday.
The MLS contingent got past perhaps its biggest test of the tour on Thursday, when the Generation adidas squad posted a 2-1 victory over Real Madrid Castilla, the reserve side for Real Madrid, on the strength of first half goals by Teal Bunbury (Sporting KC) and Dilly Duka (Columbus Crew). Gil would come off the bench for FC Dallas coach Schellas Hyndman’s team, playing the final 18 minutes in place of former RSL-Arizona product and current Houston Dynamo member MF Danny Cruz.
The Generation adidas team will practice daily at Real Madrid’s “City of Football” training complex through Monday before closing out the tour with matches against the Rayo Vallecano FC reserves on Tuesday and the Atletico Madrid reserves on Wednesday. It won’t be all business for the young MLS’ers while abroad, as the squad will have ample opportunities to soak in the sights and sounds of Madrid, including the chance to take in a La Liga fixture over the weekend and Real Madrid’s UEFA Champions League contest against Auxerre on Wednesday at the famed Santiago Bernabeu.

Both RSL-Arizona Academy squads will take to the field first on Saturday against their counterparts from the famed IMG Academy of Bradenton, Fla., with the U18’s kicking off at 9:00 a.m. and the U16’s to follow at 11:15 a.m. (all times PT), both matches taking place on Reach 11’s Field #5.
