NEW YORK – On Monday, US World Cup forward Robbie Findley informed his MLS club, Real Salt Lake, that he wished to entertain offers from foreign clubs. However, a return to MLS is not out of the question, according to his representative.
“He’s always been open-minded,” said Bill Miles, CEO of the World Series of Football, which represents Findley. “He wanted to become [a free agent] and consider all of his options during this period through January. He wanted to see what teams were interested, whether they be in MLS or otherwise.
“He’s still open-minded about [a return to MLS] and we’re in touch with [RSL general manager] Garth Lagerwey.”
Miles indicated that Findley, who will be out-of-contract at the end of the year, is looking to determine his future by mid-January.
The striker's name is among the unprotected players for Wednesday's Expansion Draft and he could be selected by either Portland or Vancouver. If neither of the two teams pick Findley, his rights would revert to Real Salt Lake. He would not be eligible for the Re-Entry Draft given that RSL made a new qualified contract offer to the player.
Miles also confirmed that there was concrete foreign interest during the summer window following the World Cup but that a transfer “didn’t work out.”
Although there are reports from Denmark indicating that Swedish club Brondby is in hot pursuit, Miles specified that other European leagues are an option, including in Scandinavia and Mexico, where the Apertura season concludes in two weeks.
“We’re considering things as they come in,” he said.
