SANDY, Utah
(Wednesday, November 17, 2010) – Real
Salt Lake’s Nat Borchers and Robbie Findley saw time with the U.S. Men’s National Team in the
squad’s 1-0 victory over South Africa in the Nelson Mandela Challenge
today in Cape Town, South Africa. Findley earned his 11th “cap” for
the United States’ senior side as a member of the first XI and played 45
minutes up top in the USA’s 4-5-1 formation, the starting nod representing his
ninth appearance for the squad in 2010. Meanwhile, Borchers would make his
first U.S. MNT appearance since 2005 – and third overall – off the bench, the
RSL Defender of the Year recipient playing the final 23 minutes of the contest
in central defense in place of Tim Ream.
The United States posted the victory
in the 15th edition of the Nelson Mandela Challenge courtesy of FW Juan
Agudelo, the 17-year-old New York Red Bulls striker scoring in the 85th
minute in his senior international debut and becoming the youngest player to
score a goal in the modern era for the U.S. MNT in the process.
MF
Jean Alexandre and Haitian National Team See Friendly at Qatar Postponed to
Thursday
Borchers and Findley are not the only
Real Salt Lake players seeking a “cap” for their country this week, but MF Jean
Alexandre will have to wait one more day in his search for more minutes
with the Haitian National Team, as the team’s friendly at Qatar
in Doha was postponed a day until Thursday. The 24-year-old Alexandre has
represented les Grenadiers five times on the senior level, the last
occasion coming back on May 4, when he started in Haiti’s 1-4 defeat to global
power Argentina in a friendly in Buenos Aires.
MF
Luis Gil Named to U.S. Under-18 Men National Team’s 36-man Camp at The Home
Depot Center
U.S. Under-18 Men’s National Team coach Mike Matkovich has included Real
Salt Lake MF Luis Gil to the 36-man roster that will take part in a
training camp from November 20-28 at The Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif.
During the nine-day camp, the U.S. U-18’s will use exhibitions against four
Southern California clubs – Ventura County Fusion, FC Hasental, Hollywood
United, and Orange County Blue Star – to prepare for the team’s upcoming trip
to Tel Aviv, Israel, in December.
The 17-year-old Gil joins the Chicago
Fire’s Victor Pineda as the only two professional players on the 36-man camp
roster. Gil made one first-team appearance for Real Salt Lake during his rookie
campaign in Major League Soccer, putting in a sturdy 45 minutes of work as a
starter in RSL’s 3-1 victory over Cruz Azul in the teams’ Group A finale in
CONCACAF Champions League play on October 19. Gil saw more playing time during
a loan stint with the USSF D-2 Pro League’s AC St. Louis, appearing in each of
the squad’s final nine contests after joining the team in mid-August. The young
midfielder started in five of those matches while compiling 445 minutes of
action and scored his first professional goal, notching the game-winner in
stoppage time of AC St. Louis’ 2-1 victory over the Austin Aztex on Sept. 18.
